Two from Blackwell sustain minor injuries in Sumner County crash on Thursday

Two people sustained minor injuries in an accident that occurred on U.S. 177 highway south of South Haven Thursday afternoon, according to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Around 1:40 p.m., John Stemle, 71, Blackwell, Okla., was southbound on the highway in a 2013 Ford Escape and began to slow down due to a farm tractor on the roadway. A southbound 2019 Freightliner came over the top of the hill and struck the Escape from behind.

Stemle and a passenger, Marlyn Stemle, 75, also of Blackwell, were said to have sustained minor injuries.

They were transported to Caldwell Regional Medical Center for treatment. All involved were wearing seat belts.

The driver of the semi was not injured.
