The Arkansas City Public Schools Board of Education on Monday recognized the V.J. Wilkins Foundation for awarding more than $105,000 in grants to support music and performing arts programs across the district.

The $105,192 grant includes $45,192 for new instruments and equipment districtwide and $60,000 to help the Arkansas City High School Marching Band participate in the 2026 Veterans Day Parade in Washington, D.C. District officials expressed appreciation for the foundation’s continued support of students and the arts.

In other business, the board approved moving forward with the next phase of the Arkansas City High School intercom project. The multi-year project began with a $39,636 state Safe and Secure Schools Grant during fiscal year 2025. Although no funding was allocated for 2026, the district will use up to $81,034 in Capital Outlay funds to continue the work.

Board members also reviewed results from recent indoor air quality testing at Arkansas City Middle School. Environmental testing by American Metropolitan Environmental, Inc. found no elevated mold or fungal levels, with air quality rated well above national standards. Minor cleaning and repairs were completed by Stover’s Restoration, and the report confirmed that ventilation systems are functioning effectively.

During the personnel report, the board accepted several resignations and retirements, including longtime eighth-grade science teacher Jeff Shaw, who will retire after the 2025–26 school year. New hires included Harlee Bullard as a student assistance team member, Tyler Clair in maintenance, and Tanner Spencer as head boys basketball coach at Arkansas City Middle School.

The board also recognized several community donations. Central Christian Church provided funds to supply clothing essentials for students at every elementary school, while the Soroptimist Club of Arkansas City contributed additional funds for clothing and hygiene items. Rogers Family Dentistry and Marlana Mills supported middle school activities, including music and Kona Ice events.
