USD 470 has announced that Nick McGrew as the new head wrestling coach for Arkansas City High School. Coach McGrew is a 2005 ACHS alum and has spent 11 years coaching in Winfield. In addition to coaching, McGrew will teach middle school physical education.
As a wrestler, he was an NAIA National Qualifier, a three-time Kansas State Tournament qualifier, and he medaled at state twice. He has coached 30 state medalists, five State champions, and ten State finalists. His team has been Division III League Champions three times, he has been honored as Division III Coach of the Year three times and was runner-up for Kansas Wrestling Coach of the Year in 2019.
McGrew said that while it won’t be easy to leave his current position, it feels good to be coming back to Ark City.
“The transition has been tough as it’s hard to say goodbye. I am very fortunate as the last 11 years I had the opportunity to work with some of the best people I know at USD 465,” McGrew said. “As for coming home, it’s really a dream come true. The history of this program speaks for itself and it’s an honor to have the opportunity to contribute to the program that, from youth through high school, made me into the person I am today.”
Ark City Athletic Director Aaron Bucher is excited to welcome Coach McGrew back home.
“He is a great coach and mentor,” Bucher said. “We look forward to watching him lead Bulldog Wrestling.”
