A utility shed fire in Winfield Tuesday night is being investigated as arson.

According to Winfield Fire Marshall Chad Mayberry Wednesday morning, firefighters were called to a structure fire at 10:20 p.m. Tuesday night at 4th and Indiana near Irving Elementary.

Mayberry said the 10×10 wooden shed was fully engulfed when crews arrived and is considered a total loss.

“There was no obvious ignition source,” Mayberry told Cowley Post. “We’re looking at arson.”

Mayberry said there where no injuries associated with the blaze or damage to surrounding structures. Firefighters had the scene under control in 30 minutes.

Mayberry said the arson case adds to several recent incidents — especially before summer.

Mayberry said from October 2022 through April of this year there were 8-10 separate structure/property fires investigated as arson.

Mayberry said a person of interest has been identified regarding a Dexter arson case from December and that there are leads regarding the other fires.
