WINFIELD – The Viking girls fell 26-23 to Buhler on Friday night. Winfield struggled offensively in the first half as they trailed 17-6 at halftime. Winfield allowed just nine second half points but came up short.
Winfield got as close as a single point at 24-23 but Buhler, who was just 4-12 at the free throw line, went 2-2 with 15 seconds remaining in the game to push their lead to three. The Vikings were unable to get off a shot and lost by three.
Ultimately, 24 turnovers and a dismal 4-16 from the free throw line cost Jason VenJohn’s team a win.
The Buhler boys entered Ollie Thomas Gymnasium on a four-game losing streak. They jumped on top of Winfield 22-9 after the first quarter and got their lead to 20 at 30-10 and cruised to a 62-47 win.
The Vikings were never able to get closer than 12 points the rest of the game. Winfield senior Evan Hutto scored 24 points for the Vikings.
The Winfield girls are now 1-9 while the boys have dropped to 4-6 after a 2-0 start. Both teams travel to McPherson on Tuesday night.
They will return home on Friday to face Wellington.
