A longtime fixture in the background of the everyday operation of the City of Winfield and the big events every year like the Walnut Valley Festival, the Cowley County Fair, K&O Steam and Gas Engine Show, several local organizations and everything in between has passed away.
Rick Meyer, a 35-year employee of the City of Winfield, died Saturday.
According to Winfield City Manager Taggart Wall Sunday, Meyer, 71, was battling a recent illness. His obituary can be read here.
“Rick was known for his grin and wit,” Wall told Cowley Post. “He always had a way of pulling people together to get things done.”
Saturday the Cowley County Fair Facebook page said Meyer was a fixture of the fair board.
“Today we lost one of our long time board members, Rick Meyer,” the post said. “Rick will be missed by so many people.”
Wall said he notified employees Saturday of Meyer’s passing.

“‘Mr. Winfield,’ as he was affectionately called, was a public servant for the City of Winfield until the end,” Wall said. “Rick was not only a special part of our City family— he was woven into the fabric of many local organizations.
We have been in touch with Rick and the family throughout the last several weeks — offering our support.”
Wall added he acknowledged people handle grief in different ways and that the City offers counseling benefits to employees.
Wall said that once celebration of life arrangements are known, the City will likely adjust service schedules to allow for employees to attend.
