An electric utility worker with the city of Wellington was killed this morning in an accident at the city’s power plant.

Around 9:20 a.m., an electric distribution lineman for the city was performing maintenance on wildlife guarding equipment, when he came into contact with an “energized piece of equipment,” according to city manager Jeff Porter. He was transported to a local emergency room by Wellington Fire/EMS but died as a result of his injuries.

There are no further details at this time. Porter said the city is working closely with outside investigators as they review the incident.

In recent months, the city of Wellington has dealt with outages caused by squirrels on its electrical equipment.

The man was not identified by name in a media statement released by the city. Two other linemen at the work site were uninjured.

“We ask that you please respect the highly sensitive nature of this incident for our employees and their families and refer any queries directly to the City Manager’s Office,” Porter said in the statement.
