Extreme weather that brought windy conditions – and low visibility – led to a multi-vehicle injury accident in Cowley County Friday afternoon, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The patrol reports a semi was forced to stop on 202nd Rd., just east of 41st Rd., due to the windy and dusty conditions. A car then struck the semi from behind and that car was struck from behind by an SUV.

Authorities had some difficulty getting to the scene due to the conditions. 56-year-old Melissa D. Carlson, of Belle Plaine, was transported to Wesley Medical Center with what KHP described as “suspected serious injury.”

She was the driver of the middle vehicle, a 2015 Mazda 6, and was wearing a seat belt. Albert L. Martinez, 33, of El Dorado, was driving the 2008 Freightliner semi involved in the accident. He was not injured.

A passenger in the semi was also uninjured. Holly R. Davidson, 39, of Winfield, was the driver of a 2010 GMC Denali that was the third vehicle involved.

She sustained minor injuries, according to the KHP report.

The accident occurred just before 3 p.m., southwest of Winfield and near Strother Field.
