MULVANE – The Winfield girls fell behind 16-3 after the first quarter but outscored Mulvane 10-8 in the second quarter and trailed by 11 at halftime. After an Ansley McCaslin free throw pulled the Vikings within 10 early in the third quarter, Mulvane erupted. The Wildcats outscored Winfield 27-2 the rest of the way to earn a 51-16 win.
Mulvane senior Kylie Schwanke, who entered the game 5-of-25 from the 3-point line, hit seven 3-pointers for a game-high 21 points. The seven 3s set a school record for made 3-pointers in a single game at Mulvane. McCaslin led Winfield with seven points. Mulvane improved to 5-2 on the season, while Winfield fell to 1-7.
In the boys game, Winfield freshman Le’gend Riley scored the first 12 points for the Vikings in the first half, but Winfield trailed 24-14 at halftime. The Vikings cut the deficit to five after three quarters and pulled within two at 38-36 in the fourth quarter. Mulvane, however, outscored Winfield 8-2 down the stretch to secure a 46-38 victory.
The key for Mulvane was its aggressive zone defense, which forced numerous Winfield turnovers and held Viking senior Evan Hutto to three points. Mulvane senior Manny Myers led the Wildcats with 13 points, and Canon Lazier added 11. Winfield fell to 4-4 on the season, while Mulvane improved to 5-2.
Both Winfield teams will play Thursday against Sunrise Christian Academy at Friends University. Winfield returns home Friday to face Buhler.
