A major bridge reconstruction project on U.S. 160 near the Cowley County Fairgrounds in Winfield is scheduled to begin March 16, weather permitting.
According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, the project will reconstruct the U.S. 160 bridge (Ninth Ave.) closest to the fairgrounds to create a smoother and more consistent road surface.
Construction will be completed in four phases over two construction seasons. The initial phase will require a full closure of the bridge and is expected to last about six weeks, conditions permitting.
Traffic will be detoured using U.S. 77, K-15, K-55 and U.S. 81.
KDOT officials said designated detours are routed along state highways for safety and maintenance considerations. Motorists may choose alternate routes, but only the official detour will be maintained by KDOT. Other roads fall under the jurisdiction of local entities.
After the initial phase is completed, construction will shift to the east half of the bridge. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction using the westbound lanes.
Once the east half is finished, crews will reconstruct the west half of the bridge, with traffic shifted into the eastbound lanes.
The $14.4 million project is being led by United Contractors Inc. of Johnston, Iowa.
KDOT expects the project to be fully completed by the end of the 2027 construction season, conditions permitting.
Motorists are urged to stay alert and follow posted signs in all work zones. For current road conditions, visit kandrive.gov or call 511.
