Police in Winfield are continuing to investigate an incident Friday in which shots were fired in the parking lot of Walmart at 2202 Pike Rd. Progress is being made, chief Robbie DeLong said Monday afternoon.

“Our officers have been following up on information and are making headway but not enough that we are ready to release” (additional information), he said, in response to questions from Cowley Post.

He added that no arrests have been made in the case.

At approximately 2:57 p.m. the day of the incident, officers from the Winfield Police Department were dispatched to Walmart in Winfield for a report of a disturbance with gunshots being reported in the parking lot. Upon arrival, officers learned that all participants of the disturbance had left the area.

It is believed that the parties involved in the incident know one another. To date, no injuries have been reported. Continue story below ad.

Officers located spent shell casings in the parking lot and after interviewing witnesses determined that an individual approached a car in the parking lot on foot, eventually firing several shots into the car. During the initial investigation there was evidence indicating that, as the vehicle that was shot at was leaving the parking lot, someone from inside the car fired at least one shot back striking an uninvolved parked and unattended vehicle.

Both the individual on foot as well as the vehicle and its occupants left the scene prior to the arrival of officers.

The Winfield Police Department was assisted by the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office.
