Winfield police and fire departments, along with the state fire marshal’s office, are investigating a Sunday morning fire that gutted a commercial building on 122 E. 5th.
Winfield Fire Marshal Chad Mayberry told Cowley Post Sunday afternoon the blaze remains under investigation. No cause of the fire has been released.
Mayberry said the building — considered a total loss — was unoccupied at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. The building housed the Winfield Thrift Store and Dreamcatchers Salon.
Mayberry said the blaze was reported to the fire department at 9:05 a.m. and when firefighters arrived, there was “heavy fire” through the roof on the east side of the building.
”Our primary concern was to contain the fire,” Mayberry said. “Especially with the 35-mph wind gusts.”
Mayberry said those efforts did save another commercial building three feet away on the northwest end of the fire.
Ark City, Burden and Udall fire departments assisted.
