An inmate at Winfield Correctional Facility died Tuesday.
According to a news release from the Kansas Department of Corrections, Michael Lynn Youngblood, 59, collapsed while working with a crew picking up trash along a highway near Wichita.
EMS was called to administer life-saving measures. The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy and is currently under investigation.
“Per protocol, when a resident dies in the custody of the KDOC, the death is under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation,” the news release said.
Youngblood was serving a 56-month sentence of drug possession with intent to distribute heroin or methamphetamine in McPherson County, Kansas.
The Winfield Correctional Facility has a capacity of 874 minimum-security adult male residents. It is located on the north side of Winfield at the site of the former Winfield State Hospital and Training Center.
“WCF serves a re-entry function designed to provide a smooth transition from an institutional setting to the community for residents expected to be soon paroled,” KDOC said.
