A Winfield Police officer is no longer with the department less than a month after being arrested for DUI and other charges.

Lt. Greg Venable’s last day with the department was July 19, according to Police Chief Robbie DeLong. He had been on administrative leave pending an internal investigation into the incident that led to his arrest.

He was promoted to lieutenant in mid 2020. He had been with the department since 2004.

A Cowley County Sheriff’s Office investigation began when authorities were called to the 1500 block of N. College in the area of the Winfield Correctional Facility. A Cowley County Sheriff’s activity log shows that around 4:20 a.m. June 29 deputies responded to a report of an unresponsive male in a truck at that location. (Continue story below ads.)

When Winfield Police discovered that the incident involved an officer with the department, they called the sheriff’s dept. to handle the investigation.

Venable was booked on charges of DUI, transporting an open container and possession of a firearm while intoxicated.
