Winfield Police nab convicted felon from Newton in arrest made late Sunday

An investigation by police in Winfield Sunday night led to the arrest of a Newton man with an extensive criminal background.

Around 9:30 p.m., 34-year-old Bryan E. Smith was booked into the Cowley County Jail on charges of possessing stolen property, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and criminal possession of a firearm. He remained in jail as of late Monday.

Smith was taken into custody in the 1100 block of 12th Ave. 28-year-old Shelby Svitak, also of Newton, was arrested at the same time . She, too, remains in jail, according to information available online.

Svitak was booked on charges of possessing stolen property and interference with law enforcement.

Kansas Dept. of Corrections records show Smith has multiple felony convictions in Harvey County, some dating as far back as 2011. Those convictions include charges of aggravated assault, attempted aggravated robbery, burglary and arson.

In Sept. 2016, Smith was sentenced to time with the Kansas Dept. of Corrections. He was released in Sept. 2021.
