Winfield police: Woman arrested without incident hours after report of gunshot fired

A standoff early this morning in Winfield eventually ended with the peaceful arrest of a local woman.

45-year-old Jesse Simmons, of Winfield, was booked into and remains in the Cowley County Jail. Initial charges include: criminal threat, criminal discharge of a firearm, and interference with a law enforcement officer, according to a media statement from the Winfield Police Dept.

Around 12:45 a.m. Monday, local officers were dispatched to an address in the 700 Block of East 13th Avenue in Winfield for the report of a gunshot. While en route to the above location officers were notified that an individual had fired one round and possibly shot a dog in the residence.  

Upon arrival and during the initial investigation officers were told by witnesses that a woman had  threatened to shoot them if they didn’t leave her residence. Three individuals left the residence and reported hearing what they described as a gunshot from inside the residence. 

Officers attempted to make contact with the female by phone but were unable to get her to comply and exit the home. The Southern Kansas SWAT team was requested to assist in this incident. 

A search warrant for the residence was obtained by local police, and members of the SWAT team tried for several hours to get the female to surrender peacefully.  (Continue reading below ads)

Then around 7:20 this morning, members of the SWAT team made entry into the residence and took the woman into custody unharmed. She was evaluated at the scene by Winfield Fire/EMS and transported to the Cowley County Jail. 

The Cowley County Sheriff’s Dept. also assisted at the scene. 

It was determined that no animals were injured in the incident.
