Updated: Thursday, 10:37 a.m. with a correction to Roth’s stance on Medicaid expansion

Kansas House Rep. Web Roth says he will file for reelection.

Roth, a Winfield Republican, represents the 79th House District in Topeka, which covers northern Cowley and Sumner counties.

“As we launch our reelection efforts in 2024, I am deeply humbled and greatly encouraged by the amount of support received from various people and organizations,” Roth said in a press release. “It is a great honor to represent the people of the 79th Kansas House District, I have fought hard on their behalf.

“Together we have made great strides yet much work remains to be done to make District 79 and Kansas all it can be.”

Roth, who is in his first term, was elected in 2022. He defeated incumbent Cheryl Helmer, a fellow Republican, in the primaries and Democrat Kris Trimmer, also of Winfield, in the general with roughly 60 percent of the vote.

When it comes to Medicaid expansion, Roth, who attended Gov. Laura Kelly’s stop in Winfield at William Newton Hospital in September rallying support for expansion, clarified Thursday morning that he’s never stated outright opposition.

“I remain open on that,” Roth said.

In his press release Wednesday morning, he said he plans to work on increasing Medicaid reimbursement rates and to reduce the Medicaid waiting list.

Roth said he has also introduced legislation to freeze property taxes for those 65 and older on their residential property and is also working on other bills to introduce that will “benefit the citizens of District 79 and Kansans statewide.”

Roth currently serves on the Ag and Natural Resources committee, Energy and Telecommunications committee, and the Welfare Reform committee.
