NEWKIRK — Newkirk firefighters responded to a house fire at 8:53 p.m. Monday in the 500 block of west 7th Street.
Newkirk fire chief Adam Longcrier said that when crews arrived the flames were shooting through the roof.
“We made an immediate attack on the roof with the water cannons and was able to get that under control. Crews made entry and we were able to get a good knock down on the house.”
Longcrier said the cause of the fire is believed to be electrical.
“The fire started at the front door and we were made aware of an outlet near the door that quit working. There were also problems with the porch light. There were cameras on each of the corners of the home. We reviewed the footage and ruled out arson.”
Longcrier said the home is severely damaged. “The fire made its way to the eaves and into the attic.”
Longcrier said that Newkirk police and Kay County deputies were close by when the call came and were able to make sure no one was in the house before fire crews arrived. The Red Cross is assisting the residents.
River Road and Kildare firefighters assisted with the blaze.
Longcrier said firefighters are high alert for the rest of the week as fire conditions continue to be exceptional. He said Newkirk is not allowing any burning outside. Blackwell made the same announcement on Monday. “We were very lucky on Friday said Longcrier. Everyone needs to be careful.”’
