A woman and young boy were seriously injured in a hit-and-run accident late Tuesday night on Main Street in Winfield.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol Wednesday morning, a 2011 Ford pickup driven by 23-year-old Audrey Yingling of Winfield was northbound in the parking lot of Pizza Hut at 1902 Main Street at 11:07 p.m., struck two pedestrians and then left the scene.
The pedestrians were identified as 30-year-old Meighan Hipsher of Burden and an unidentified juvenile.
Winfield Police Chief Robbie DeLong told Cowley Post Wednesday morning Yingling was arrested for DUI, and the juvenile with Hipsher was her child. Yingling was booked into the Cowley County Jail. Yingling was also charged with causing bodily harm and injury behind the wheel.
KHP said there was also a juvenile in the pickup with Yingling.
The pickup was impounded by the WPD.
Both Hipsher and her child were sent to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. DeLong said the child was transported to William Newton Hospital by patrol car and then to Wichita via helicopter.
“The second victim, a juvenile male, was transported to William Newton Hospital initially by a patrol car due to the fear of the injuries the child had sustained,” a news release from the WPD later Wednesday afternoon said.
The news release added that the pickup and Yingling were located at a residence in Winfield.
DeLong said the incident is still under investigation and more charges could be pending. The Cowley County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
More information will be added as soon as it becomes available.
