Local man is arrested Wednesday following Winfield Police stabbing investigation

A stabbing investigation in Winfield Wednesday morning has led to the arrest of a 29-year-old local man.

Dustin Barta, Winfield, was booked into the Cowley County Jail on initial charges of attempted first degree murder, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia. 

Around 10:15 a.m., Winfield Police Department and Winfield Fire and EMS were dispatched to the 200 block of West 10th Ave. for the report of a victim who had been stabbed. Upon arrival officers encountered a 24-year old female who had what appeared to be a stab wound to her neck area. 

Officers rendered aid until medical personnel arrived on scene. The victim was transported to William Newton  Memorial Hospital in serious condition.  

During the course of the investigation a suspect was developed and identified. Mr. Barta is a known associate of the victim. It is believed that this is an isolated incident and there is no known threat to the public, police said through a written media statement.

Barta is currently in custody.
