A garage was destroyed, and cars were burned, in a fire late Saturday in Ark City, fire officials said.
An exact cause of the blaze has yet to be determined and an investigation is ongoing. Damage was estimated at $50,000.
Around 10 p.m., the Ark City Fire – EMS Dept. responded to a 911 call reporting a structure fire in the 1300 block of N. 4th. Multiple fire units responded to the scene and found a garage fully engulfed by flames. A vehicle was inside the garage and fire had begun spreading to a second vehicle outside.
Fire crews worked to keep fire from spreading to the adjacent home. Four people escaped the home without injury.
Firefighters quickly attacked the blaze, successfully preventing it from spreading into the home’s interior. Mutual aid from the Winfield
Fire/EMS Department assisted with suppression efforts and helped stop the fire from reaching neighboring properties.
Arkansas City firefighters remained on scene overnight to monitor for flare-ups.
Following an investigation by Arkansas City Fire Marshal Gary Bowker, in coordination with the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office, the fire was determined to have originated in the garage.
