A commercial building housing Winfield’s Powder Valley Outdoor Sports sustained heavy fire damage early Sunday when flames swept through the warehouse and processing areas, authorities said.
The Winfield Fire/EMS Department was dispatched around 2:35 a.m. to 17295 151st Road and found the structure heavily involved. Firefighters launched a defensive attack after learning no one was working inside. As additional units arrived, crews advanced to stop the fire’s spread and secure the building.
Mutual aid came from fire departments in Arkansas City, Atlanta, Burden, Dexter, Oxford and Udall. Crews established a rehab area to monitor the health of emergency personnel.
The Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating the cause.
Firefighters remained on scene into the day, extinguishing hot spots and conducting overhaul operations.
Authorities said the incident appears unrelated to another structure fire reported the previous evening. Online Cowley County property records show the building is owned by Bryan and Noel Richardson.

To our Powder Valley family,
We’re okay.
The calls you get at 3 a.m. are never the ones you want. Early this morning, a fire tore through our primary warehouse. It’s a devastating, total loss of the building and the inventory inside.
What matters most is that every Powder Valley employee is safe, and so are the first responders who showed up for us. For that, we’re profoundly grateful.
This is a hard day. But this community scraps and fights and lifts each other up. We’ve seen it time and again. We’re going to rally, rebuild, and come back stronger.
