Potent ground game helps Rose Hill convincingly hand Wellington second loss

Wellington fell to Rose Hill 55-14 Friday night at Sellers Park, as the Rockets used a dominant rushing attack and a string of Crusader turnovers to take control early. The loss drops Wellington to 5-2 on the season.

The Crusaders turned the ball over four times, including three in the first half, as Rose Hill built a 27-7 halftime lead. Senior running back Keedrin Jones scored five touchdowns, while Kai Kirchoff Jones added two more as the Rockets broke the game open in the third quarter.

Wellington’s points came on a 25-yard reverse run by Zakhyon Roberts and an 80-yard touchdown sprint by Jalik Armstrong, who finished with 136 yards. Despite several promising drives, Wellington couldn’t overcome its mistakes.

Rose Hill’s rushing game controlled the pace from start to finish, putting together long scoring drives and keeping the Crusader defense on the field. Wellington will travel to El Dorado next week.

Running attack too much for Winfield in loss to Buhler

A steady running attack, a tough defensive line, and a special teams score proved to be too much for the Winfield Vikings as they fell 41-21 at Buhler on Friday night.

Buhler ran the ball 41 times for 317 yards as they methodically dismantled the Viking defense.  Senior Ben Clousse and sophomore Hendrix Blackburn each ran for over 100 yards on the night.  Quarterback Asher Zachary only threw five passes, but two of them went for touchdowns.

Buhler led 14-0 with two minutes to play until halftime.  Then came two back-breaking plays for the Vikings.  Zachary hit Landon Martinez for a 69-yard touchdown strike to give Buhler a 21-0 halftime lead.  The Crusaders received the second half kickoff and Martinez returned it 88 yards for a touchdown and a 28-0 lead.

Trailing 41-0 midway through the 4th quarter, the Winfield offense began to click as quarterback Kellen Gibson threw a completion to Evan Hutto, who then lateraled the ball to Elijah Bergeson for a 31 yard touchdown. Gibson the found Hutto for touchdowns of 72 and 64 yards, but Winfield would get no closer, losing by 20. Gibson finished the evening 14-25 for 264 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception.

The Vikings are 1-6 and will wrap up the regular season with a senior night home game vs Mulvane at 7 pm.
