A cattle truck overturned early Monday morning on U.S. 160 west of Winfield near the livestock sale barn, killing some of the animals on board and shutting down the highway for several hours.

The accident occurred at approximately 1:44 a.m. Monday, according to the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said a blue 1998 Peterbilt semi owned by Catlett and Sons, LLC, was driven by 46-year-old Jason Campbell of Silex, Missouri.

The truck was hauling cattle at the time of the crash, though officials said it was not headed to the sale barn.

U.S. 160 remained closed for multiple hours while crews worked to remove the overturned truck, deal with the cattle, and clear the roadway.

Authorities said the total number of cattle on board and how many survived was not immediately known.
